About Hugo Keulers
Hugo Keulers is a Partner of our Commercial and Dispute Resolution practices and heads our Insurance and Reinsurance team. He is also the current Managing Partner.
Hugo’s practise today is mostly focused on large and complex liability and insurance claims in areas such as All Risk Property, Construction All Risk Insurance, ALOP Insurance, D&O, Professional Indemnity and Product Liability Insurance. He is the trusted advisor of a large number of international and Belgian insurers on complex and sensitive legal issues, often with an important financial impact.
He has a wide practice over more than 25 years in commercial law advice and commercial litigation. He has extensive experience in commercial disputes, contract termination claims, corporate litigation and is particularly well-known for reinsurance and insurance litigation. In Legal 500 he is even ranked as 1 of 2 Leading Individuals in Insurance for Belgium and he was personally described as a “top class international insurance lawyer“. As he often represents international clients, he is very well aware of the cultural and legal differences in commercial contracts between Belgian and non-Belgian companies.
He is one of the few Belgian lawyers with experience in handling complex reinsurance and insurance disputes before the Belgian courts and arbitration panels in all lines of insurance. He is the trusted advisor of a large number of international and Belgian reinsurers and insurers, brokers and specialised foreign law firms.
Hugo is also visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) where he teaches International Trade as part of the Banaba Advanced Business Management International Law Program. He is a member of the Steering Group of ALLIC (Antwerp Liability Law and Insurance Chair) of the University of Antwerp, which Lydian co-sponsors.
Hugo is recommended as leading individual by Legal 500, Chambers Global and Europe and Who’s Who Legal in Insurance and Reinsurance and in Dispute Resolution. He is also mentioned in the Guide to the World's Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers and in Euromoney’s Expert Guide 2016 as one of the most outstanding practitioners in this field in Belgium.
He is a member of the insurance committee of the International Bar Association (IBA), of the Belgian Risk Management Association (BELRIM) and of the Belgian Association of Insurance Lawyers (AJA).
Hugo graduated with a law degree from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in 1991. In 1995, he obtained a degree in insurance science from the IPO Management School of the University of Antwerp (UIA). In 2002 he completed a postgraduate course in financial management at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL). Hugo was admitted to the Brussels bar in 1991 and is now a member of both the Brussels Bar and the Hasselt Bar, admitted to plead cases before all Belgian courts.
