Expertise and experience
Bastiaan provides comprehensive advice to organisations across various industry sectors on data protection (privacy) matters and regulation of the digital space. He has extensive experience in ICT-related transactions, including large-scale software licensing, development, and implementation projects. He advises both customers and suppliers on several types of outsourcing projects (BPO and ITO) and offers guidance on electronic communications regulatory issues. His broad experience includes drafting and negotiating agreements in the field of electronic communications, assisting clients with e-commerce (B2B, B2C, and C2C) and Internet projects, and drafting and negotiating long-term, technology-driven strategic agreements, including those within the framework of M&A transactions. Bastiaan also has solid experience in cybersecurity, cybercrime, and contentious ICT matters, and regularly advises on projects related to innovative technologies (including Artificial Intelligence) and innovative data use.
As an expert in intellectual property, Bastiaan is well-equipped to navigate the complex IP issues that may arise in data and technology projects and transactions.
Background
Bastiaan obtained his Master Degree in Law from KU Leuven in 1994 (magna cum laude). He is a fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) and holds an LL.M. from the University of Chicago Law School (1996). He holds additional certifications from Vlerick Business School (Negotiation), London School of Economics (Data: Law, Policy and Regulation) and Oxford University (Artificial Intelligence Programme). He is also a AIPP Certified Information Privacy Professional – Europe (CIPP/E).
Bastiaan is a member of the Brussels Bar.

Bastiaan is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences on (personal) data, technology and ICT matters. He regularly authors articles published in (international) legal reviews such as World Data Protection Report, DataGuidance, Computerrecht (Computer Law), Privacy & Informatie (Privacy & Information), Bulletin des Assurances (Insurance Law Journal) and Tijdschrift Persoonsgegevens en Privacy (Personal Data and Privacy Review).
